  • Describe what is a compact privilege.
  • Identify which states have enacted the DDH compact.
  • Identify the criteria a dentist or dental hygienist must have to apply for a compact privilege in a participating state.
  • Describe benefits of the DDH compact.
  • Distinguish misinformation about DDH compact from facts.

 

Speakers:

JoAnn Gurenlian, RDH, MS, PhD, AAFAAOM, FADHA is the Director of Education and Research for the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA). She is Professor Emerita for the Department of Dental Hygiene at Idaho State University and an Affiliate Fellow in the American Academy of Oral Medicine. Dr. Gurenlian is Past President of the International Federation of Dental Hygienists and the ADHA. She is the co-author of the textbook "Preventing Medical Emergencies" and author of over 300 publications in dental hygiene, dental and medical journals. She has conducted over 600 presentations at regional, national and international events. Dr. Gurenlian is the recipient of numerous awards including the IADR Oral Health Research Group 25th Oral Health Research Award, ADHA Presidential Citations, and Esther Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award.

Matt Crespin, MPH, RDH, FADHA
serves as executive director at Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin and leads all aspects of the Alliance's key health initiatives which include emergency care; environmental health; food security; injury prevention and death review; medical home; and oral health. Matt leads efforts to build partnerships with government agencies, health systems, organizations and individuals to foster the Alliances work. In 2019-20, Matt served as the first male president of the American Dental Hygienists' Association in its 100-year history. He stays active in ADHA by hosting and producing the Official ADHA Podcast and was involved in developing the dental and dental hygiene interstate licensure compact. 

Dr. Anthony Ziebert has been the Senior Vice-president for Education and Professional Affairs for the past 12 years at the ADA. The Division of Education has over 70 full-time staff and includes four Commissions (the Commission on Dental Accreditation, the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, the National Commission on Dental Specialty and Certifying Board Recognition, and the Commission on Continuing Education Provider Recognition); the Council on Dental Education and Licensure; and the ADA Library and Archives. Prior to his current role, Dr. Ziebert was the Director of the Commission on Dental Accreditation and was a full-time faculty member at the Marquette University School of Dentistry.  He received his D.D.S. degree from the Georgetown University School of Dentistry and specialty training in Prosthodontics at Marquette University School of Dentistry.

Matt Shafer currently serves as the Deputy Director at the National Center for Interstate Compacts at The Council of State Governments. Matt works with state legislators and stakeholder groups to support the enactment of compacts for cosmetology, massage therapy, social work and dentistry. Matt currently also manages interstate compact development projects for dietitians and school psychologists. Matt has vast experience developing and building consensus on policy options for state legislators. Matt has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Kentucky.
