Oral Complications of Oncologic Treatments: Hygienist’s Role

With advancement of medicine, 5 year survival rate of cancer is dramatically increasing for the past few decades that result in more and more survivors in general. Although the oncologic treatments are superior to treat various cancers, they also come with many adverse effects including oral complications. With increased survivors and various new treatments, number of patients with oral complications that oral healthcare providers face are increasing. This presentation will review risks and clinical manifestations of several oral complications of oncologic treatments. This presentation will also discuss about the role of dental hygienists to prevent or lessen the intensity of the complications as well as for dental hygienists to manage patients with these complications.

  • Review acute and chronic side effects of cancer treatment.

Speakers
Dr. Kentaro Ikeda is an associate surgeon in the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women's Hospital and serves as the clinical director of the Division. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine and holds Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. He maintains an Oral Medicine practice at Brigham and Women's Hospital and at Dana Farber Cancer Institute manages various oral mucosal diseases, orofacial pain conditions, and oral complications of oncologic treatments. 

Jennifer Brown, BSDH, RDH, CH-OSE is the Director of Dental Services and dental hygienist at CARTI Cancer Center. She has focused on her hygiene role in oncology for over 10 years, working in cancer centers in Colorado and now Arkansas. She is a certificate holder in Oral Systemic Education and is working to complete her certificate and capstone in Oncology with NNHH. She is an instructor for the National Network of Health Care Hygienists' Oncology Certificate, and Adjunct Faculty for the Department of Dental Hygiene-UAMS College of Health Professionals. She is a published co-author and speaker  of  multiple works on the role of the dental hygienist in oncology including Seattle Study Club, Immunize Arkansas HPV Summit, and Student American Dental Hygienists' Association.
