Speaker: JoAnn Gurenlian, RDH, MS, PhD, AAFAAOM, FADHA
Program Track: Clinical
Course Description: The European Federation of Periodontology recently published the first formal evidence-based guidelines for treating periodontitis to help clinicians all over the world provide the best possible treatment for their patients. In doing so, recommendations were made noting that flossing was not the first choice for interdental cleaning in periodontal maintenance patients. While evidence has existed for over a decade offering options beyond flossing, there appears to be a reluctance to consider alternatives to string floss. This course will review the science behind options for interproximal biofilm cleaning, including new technologies dental hygienists can consider recommending to patients for home care instruction. We will answer those burning questions, such as should we use string floss after water flossing, and can we provide alternatives that are equally effective to string floss? Let's take a fresher look at this age-old controversy and resolve our concerns!
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the utilization of floss among consumers.
- Describe options for interproximal biofilm cleaning and the evidence that supports their use.
- Utilize critical thinking to make decisions about person-centered care for flossing alternatives.
