Course Description: Transitioning from extended student clinic appointments to the fast-paced workflow of private practice can feel daunting. This module equips dental hygiene students with practical tools to balance clinical efficiency, self-care, and professional excellence. Through time audits, schedule analysis, and prioritization exercises, students will identify personal habits that either support or hinder productivity. The session concludes with strategies to prevent burnout, streamline appointments, and create sustainable routines for lifelong success.

2. Resilience: How to Adapt and Thrive in Changing Environments

Presented by: Kelli Swanson Jaecks, MA, RDH, FADHA

Course Description: The transition from education to clinical practice and the rapid evolution of dentistry, can be both exciting and stressful. This course explores resilience as a learnable skill that allows dental professionals to adapt, grow, and thrive in changing environments. Participants will examine how stress impacts the brain, influences mindset, and affects decision-making and performance. Through practical reflection and evidence-based strategies, learners will distinguish between fixed and growth mindsets, practice reframing stress, and develop tools to navigate change with confidence and flexibility. Designed for students and early-career dental professionals, this course provides actionable insights to build adaptability, reduce burnout, and support long-term professional success.

3. Emotional Intelligence in Practice

Presented by: Lesley Harbison, MS, RDH, EPP, FADHA

Course Description: Emotional Intelligence in Practice explores the essential role emotional intelligence (EI) plays in the success of dental hygiene students and early-career dental hygienists. Participants will examine the key components of EI—including self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills—and learn how these competencies influence communication, teamwork, leadership, patient care, stress management, and professional well-being. Through real-world dental hygiene scenarios, self-reflection activities, and evidence-based strategies such as mindfulness, emotional regulation techniques, and adaptive communication, learners will develop practical skills for managing challenging situations, building stronger relationships with patients and colleagues, and reducing the risk of burnout. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with tools to enhance their emotional intelligence and promote greater personal, academic, and professional success.
