Course Description: This course will be designed to guide dental hygienists through the transition from clinical practice to dental hygiene education. The course will review required education and qualifications, including advanced degrees, the application process for educator positions, and strategies for networking with current faculty. Key resources such as the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and American Dental Education Association (ADEA) will be highlighted. The presentation will introduce the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), including educator requirements, student-to-faculty ratios, and subject matter expertise. Participants will receive an overview of typical didactic and clinical teaching loads. The course will also address benefits of academia, such as mentoring future professionals and reduced physical demands, as well as challenges including calibration and communication. Practical tips such as shadowing faculty, attending school events, and completing refresher courses will be included.

  • Describe the role, settings, and requirements/qualifications of a dental hygiene educator.
  • Identify strategies and resources for pursuing a dental hygiene education position.
  • Describe dental hygiene program structure, accreditation standards, and student characteristics that shape teaching.
  • Evaluate the personal and professional realities of transitioning into academia, including calibration, common challenges, and benefits.
