Speaker: Barbara A. Brent, DHA, MSAH, RDH, FADHA

Program Track: Educational Methodologies

Course Description: This course equips dental hygiene educators with evidence-based methodologies for effectively teaching medical emergencies within dental hygiene curricula. Emergency preparedness in dental settings requires more than foundational knowledge—it demands the integration of clinical judgment, rapid decision-making, communication, and coordinated team response during patient care. Participants will explore instructional design strategies aligned with CODA standards, including simulation-based learning, case-based teaching, and mock emergency drills. The course also addresses faculty calibration techniques and competency-based assessment methods to support consistent, high-quality instruction across programs. Through practical teaching frameworks, real-world case examples, and ready-to-use tools such as sample scenarios and assessment templates, educators will gain strategies to enhance student confidence, improve clinical readiness, and foster a culture of safety in both didactic and clinical environments.

Learning Objectives:

  • Design structured lesson plans that integrate simulation, case-based learning, and mock emergency drills to enhance student preparedness in dental hygiene programs.
  • Align instructional strategies with CODA standards to effectively teach emergency recognition, risk assessment, and clinical response in dental settings.
  • Construct competency-based assessment tools to evaluate student performance in emergency management, critical thinking, and team communication.
  • Implement faculty calibration strategies to ensure consistency in teaching, simulation delivery, and evaluation of emergency preparedness across didactic and clinical environments.
