Course Description: This three-part professional development series is designed to support faculty in effectively teaching dental materials in both didactic and laboratory settings. The series offers a comprehensive overview of the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards related to faculty-to-student ratios, curriculum management, and educational methodologies. It also covers key content areas from the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) and introduces evidence-based instructional strategies grounded in adult learning theory. Participants will explore practical teaching methods and best practices aimed at enhancing student engagement, clinical relevance, and learning outcomes. The course also incorporates effective analogies and real-world examples to help reinforce core dental materials concepts and improve knowledge retention.

Learning Objectives:

• Analyze and apply relevant CODA standards pertaining to the instruction of dental materials, including curriculum requirements and faculty qualifications.
• Describe how the dental materials course content and activities align with the Dental Hygiene National Board Examination to reinforce clinically relevant applications of dental materials.
• Differentiate and apply andragogical approaches that address the unique needs of adult learners in dental hygiene education.
• Implement effective instructional strategies to enhance student understanding and engagement in both the didactic and laboratory components of dental materials courses.
