Course Description: How can ethical decision-making transform dental hygiene education, going beyond traditional lectures to fully engage students? This interactive course empowers educators to align their teaching with the Standards for Clinical Dental Hygiene Practice, using active-learning techniques to deepen students' understanding of ethical principles in patient care. Designed for educators in the dental hygiene field, this course offers innovative strategies to create engaging, discussion-based ethics courses that foster critical thinking and real-world problem-solving. Through collaborative activities, you’ll learn to guide students in applying ethical standards, ensuring they’re prepared to uphold the highest levels of integrity and professionalism in their future practice.

• Define the ethical care competencies continuum in relation to dental hygiene.
• Define ethical decision-making.
• Relate the Standards for Clinical Dental Hygiene Practice to ethical practice.
• Discuss how dental concepts have been traditionally taught, and why.
• Define active-learning teaching methodology.
• Explain methods to disassemble and reassemble a course to meet its objectives using a non-lecture format.
• Demonstrate active-learning strategies that promote critical thinking and problem-solving in the clinical dental setting.
