Educational Methodologies: Designing Learning That Works

Speaker: Amy Vinci, EdD

Program Track: Educational Methodologies

Course Description: This course introduces educators to core instructional design principles that support effective, evidence-based teaching across in-person, online, and hybrid learning environments. Participants examine common learning myths, clarify the differences between neuroscience and learning science, and explore widely used frameworks such as Backward Design, ADDIE, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Bloom’s Taxonomy. Using practical examples and applied strategies, the course emphasizes writing clear, measurable learning objectives, aligning assessments with intended outcomes, and designing engaging and inclusive learning experiences. Evidence-based teaching methods including retrieval practice, scaffolding, active learning, and transparent assignment design are highlighted to improve learner engagement, accessibility, and long-term retention. Throughout the course, the focus remains on supporting faculty in creating high-quality, research-informed instruction that enhances learning without adding unnecessary instructional burden.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the role of instructional design principles in creating effective, evidence-based learning experiences.
  • Evaluate common learning myths and neuroscience-based claims using principles from learning science.
  • Apply evidence-based teaching strategies (e.g., retrieval practice, scaffolding, inclusive teaching) to instructional scenarios.
  • Design clear, measurable learning objectives and assessments aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy and course outcomes.
