Speaker: Mia L. Geisinger, DDS, MS

Program Track: Clinical

Course Description: Implant-related complications are common and difficult to manage. Many patient-, site-, and fixture-related factors convey risk of future peri-implant diseases and should be addressed and, if possible, controlled prior to implant placement. Understanding factors that increase the risk of implant complications prior to or during the treatment planning process for tooth replacement is critical to reduce overall incidence of peri-implant disease. Once complications are identified, it is then critical to identify those complications early and intervene in an appropriate manner. Ongoing implant maintenance that includes implant evaluation in an individualized, risk-based schedule is integral to the health and function of dental implants. This course will address the risk factors associated with biologic implant complications, the importance of preventive maintenance to reduce the risk of peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis, and methods to identify and treat peri-implant diseases to improve implant success and survival. *Note: This course offers a closed-captioned option as well as auto-translated subtitles in 10 languages.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess risk factors for peri-implantitis and identify high and low-risk patients before, during, and after implant placement and restoration.
  • Identify and implement patient-centered, customized supportive therapy to reduce rates of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis in patients with dental implants.
  • Discuss the importance of preventive strategies for peri-implantitis including maintaining good oral hygiene, dental implant maintenance, and elimination of risk factors in order to reduce the risk of developing peri-implantitis with dental and medical colleagues and patients.
  • Develop strategies to detect peri-implant disease early and intervene to reduce attachment and implant loss in at-risk patients.
