Course Description: Dental hygienists are encouraged to make evidence-based decisions on new clinical protocols, procedures or treatments. Students who participate in the research process from start to finish gain an appreciation for the steps needed to conduct original research. Conducting original research can be a daunting undertaking for dental hygiene students. The purpose of this course is to share our framework for facilitating a faculty directed research capstone. A successful formula for completing original research includes a well-organized plan to move students from an original proposal, data collection and analysis, to presentation of findings. This session will demonstrate how we facilitate a dental hygiene capstone course that enables students to complete original research in one semester. *Note: This course offers a closed-captioned option.
Learning Objectives:
- Acquire new ideas to develop or enhance a directed research course for dental hygiene students.
- Identify the successes and challenges of a research capstone.
- Describe examples of faculty-directed student dental hygiene research projects.
